Your Sacred Time – Adding Ritual To Your Day
By Ellen Zucker | April 17, 2010
If your days are anything at all like mine, the hours and the minutes just seem to fly by. That is, of course, if you are not stuck in traffic or sentenced to serve time in an endless meeting.
The temptation is to put out fires and deal with pressing everyday matters–who else is going to tend to bill paying (not to mention earning the money that pays those bills), food shopping, or take the car in for inspection…
By the time you are finished, you’re exhausted and you haven’t done anything to nurture your self.
I suggest adding another item to your daily ‘To Do’ list.
End (or begin) the day with a ritual of healing and nurturing to yourself. Consider this sacred time–because caring and honoring yourself is a sacred act. And, yes, you deserve it.
This can take any number of forms and you get to pick and choose. The only criterion is that the activity(s) are totally self indulgent and nurturing.
It can be a physical activity such as a healing bath where you relax and literally let your hair down as the cleansing water washes the day’s cares away.
If you are an artist or just enjoy creative self-expression, then some time at your easel or drawing table will be very nurturing. It is not necessary to do anything more than doodle or play. In fact it is good to let your hands do what they will without the pressure of producing something to a standard.
Same with music or poetry.
Then see what evolves.
Pulling a Tarot Card of the Day gives you a heads up on themes to look for as the day unfolds or concludes (depending on whether you do this in the morning or evening).
If you do this, then I strongly suggest supplementing this with recording the card-pull and your observations in a journal so that you can observe patterns over time. You will also be able to go back and add insights as they come to you. The Tarot often reveals its wisdom over time.
Lastly, consider setting aside some time for meditation. Meditation reconnects you to the stillness within. This is where you find the connection to your Source energy–or as some call it, your ‘higher wisdom’ or intuition.
Your Source energy is what grounds you and centers you. When you are connected to it and feel it flowing through you, you feel powerful and in control.
When you are connected to your source energy, you will not be easily intimidated. Actions taken and decisions made will serve your best interests in the widest and broadest sense.
Doing some or all (or other activities that are healing to you) on a daily basis honors you, and centers, heals and strengthens you.

I absolutely loved this post, Ellen. Taking time for oneself is so key to EVERYTHING – and so often it’s the last thing on the “To Do List” (if it makes it onto the list at all). And I appreciate that you call this time sacred. It is just that! So very important, nourishing, and healing. Thank you for this beautiful reminder of the simple gifts we can give to ourselves each and every day!

Thank you, Paula. Coming from the Time Finder, your comments is meaningful indeed. I have to admit, though, some days my own advice is easier said than done. But it is worth the effort. I’m glad you agree.

Hi Ellen,
This is an especially meaningful post. As I am an artist, I know first hand the power of having a quiet time, and usually it comes with my going into the studio and closing the door. Sometimes I have no idea of what to draw or paint, so I take out a 5 X 7 sheet of watercolor paper and lay down beautiful rich colors, usually the fall colors, and I’m in my own little world as I slowly come alive with my creativity.
