Self-Employment – What Can the Two of Pentacles Teach You About Running A Business?
By Ellen Zucker | February 28, 2010
The Tarot card, Two of Pentacles has much to teach you if you are self employed or an entrepreneur.
The Rider-Waite-Smith version shows a man balancing two pentacles above his head. He is dancing side-to-side as he tries to maintain his balance. Behind him are two ships, each traveling on its own rolling wave.
It can be said that a constant of running any business is that you have to function in an environment of constant change. That is probably more true today than ever.
From this you must learn to be flexible, sure-footed, and adapt to change quickly. In doing so you learn to roll with the punches.
The figure dances back and forth while he juggles the pentacle disks over his head. His body leans one way and his head, the other. In this way, he does not fall.
His disks are encased in a ‘lemniscate‘ or infinity symbol. If he can get the momentum going he can juggle those pentacles in the air forever.
He works hard to maintain his balance–but maintaining balance in a shifting environment is a dynamic process.
He adjusts then quickly readjusts as the momentum shifts one way and then another. Because he moves constantly, he does not have time to get stuck. Just as, when running your business, you must constantly reevaluate your preconceptions in the light of changing conditions. What worked yesterday may not be so effective today.
The number two of any Tarot card describes a process or a situation that is still new and malleable. Out Tarot figure is just beginning the process of taking thoughts and ideas and making them into a tangible stream of income, but there is much tweaking yet to be done.
Many new businesses have to go through a period of trial and error until they find what works for them. This is especially true for many self-employed and micro-business owners that go out on their own because there is no niche–many are offering a unique service or offering something more conventional in an individual way. Since there is no guide book for these people, they have to figure it out as they go.
Trial and error is a large part of the research to find the most fertile soil and best methods to grow their business.
We continue to watch our figure. He is finding a rhythm. When he finds his rhythm, he can keep going and going while expending no wasted effort. And then you realize what is happening. He is dancing!

I am using your course Ellen, the free email one, to learn more about my intuition. It seems to have been repressed! I am sticking with your suggestions and following the plan daily.

I’m gratified to hear of your progress! We live in a culture that puts a high value on the intellect, logic, and analytical thinking and rightly so. But it doesn’t teach us to value our intuition. I, too, have trouble with my intellect getting in the way. We just have to keep at it and relax into it. Think of it this way, left-brain or logical thinking analyzes or breaks things down, while right-brain thinking–intuition–works by synthesizing information.

Would love to see a picture of the two of pentacles in your post here, Ellen. Have been a student of numbers for many years… (I wonder if that attracted me to poker)
When I look at the number two, I think of partnerships, relationships, the duality of juggling two situations. Your post reminded me to look at how effective I am as an entrepreneur at balancing being the one who runs the business and one who works in business, and where I can be more productive. Thank you.
