Adaptability and Facilitation – Bridging the Seasons Through The Mutable Signs

By Ellen Zucker | February 21, 2010

Last Thursday, the Sun entered Pisces for a 30 day stay.

Pisces is the last sign through which the Sun travels before the arrival of spring.

Astrologers call the last sign of a season ‘mutable,’ because these signs are a bridge between the season coming to a close and the new one about to begin.

There are four seasons and four mutable signs: Pisces, Gemini, Virgo, and Sagittarius. While these signs are very different from one another – Pisces is water, Gemini is air, Virgo is earth and Sagittarius is fire, they also have much in common.

The mutable signs are known for their ease in adapting to change, because that is their function. It is the people with a high quotient of mutable energy that are our natural facilitators, helping others adapt. That is because people born with many planets or sensitive points in mutable signs are able to roll with the punches more easily than others.

Mutable signs help us tie up the loose ends of the season coming to a close so that we can embrace the new season to come.

Pisces’ watery energy makes us sensitive to the environment and the emotions of others. People born with planets or sensitive points in Pisces tend to be highly intuitive.

Pisces energy’s function is to open us to our right-brain functions. That includes the use of our imagination, art, music, poetry, meditation, dreaming, and strenthening our spiritual connection… It is through this mechanism that we synthesize information and impressions to create a vision that is totally new.

Doing the visioning work of Pisces puts you in the drivers seat when the Sun shifts into Aries and the emphasis is on taking action. Clearly, your actions are much more effective if you have a vision in place.

Gemini is the bridge between spring and summer. Its purpose is to gather information. The spring is a dynamic time in the natural world–that is when new growth first appears, the weather warms and the days grow long.

Gemini’s information gathering which can be formal, as in a research lab, or more social, as in a party, seeks to get us ready for the next season, summer, our peak growing time. Doing our legwork in preparation helps to ensure a fertile harvest which is necessary to get us through the coming year.

Virgo, the last season of summer, is all about the harvest. Like the Tarot card, Seven of Pentacles, it counts and analyzes the results of the work already done.

The weather turns in the Autumn–days grow shorter and cooler. Sagittarius is the last of the mutable signs bridging Fall and Winter. With the responsibilities of the harvest long behind us, we have the opportunity to share what we have learned. And so Sagittarius is associated with teaching, especially higher education.

It is a time of celebration–in the US, the Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday season encompassed by the month that the Sun makes its way through the sign. We celebrate before hunkering down into the cold winter and the cycle begins again.
